Hello all, I wanted to propose a new extension rule. Please read it and cast your vote.
This new extension rule will allow each team to have two extensions each season.
The first extension will be very similar to the current rule. You can extend one player with one year remaining on his contract. (Example: Lamar Jackson 3M (2021) UFA) with this extension you can extend this player up to three years. *YOU CAN ONLY USE THIS EXTENSION ON A PLAYER WITH ONE YEAR REMAINING ON CONTRACT*
The second extension is for players with two or more years remaining on the contract. The new contract cannot exceed 5 years, so if they had two years remaining you can sign them for three more years. If they have three years remaining you can sign them for two more years.
Players with RFA status can be extended but then they lose the RFA status.
With the addition of this second extension there are two other changes I propose: 1: we eliminate the ability to extend a player twice, once they have been extended then they become UFA at the end of their contract.
2: a player can only be franchised one time. There is no more FT 2, once a player is franchised he becomes a UFA the next season.
The reason for these changes are to try to keep an intriguing free agent class each year. Adding another extension can really water down the free agent pool. I tried to counter that with the other changes. This new extension rule allows us to keep an extra player each year while also still preserving the UFA pool each year.
If this rule is approved it will go into effect at the beginning of the 2022 offseason.

Voting no simply because I believe it needs to be 2022 before the second extension should go into place. Immediately overvalues too many players that were drafted in inaugural with only 1 extension available

I was just thinking go all in from the beginning 😀

i like this new rule, very beneficial for all teams. a one time franchise tag makes sense, we all tend to cringe at the notion of giving a player a 2nd FT. my only request is that the rule be implemented in either the 2022 or 2023 season, it gives GMs a chance to get themselves ready to decide whom best to use the ruling on....

Ok early in this vote I agree with feedback, I’ve changed the proposal to go into effect for the 2022 offseason. I don’t want to push it beyond that but I understand it’s a big fundamental change so if approved it will go into effect for the 2022 offseason.
